NEW! Acqua di Gio Profondo by Giorgio Armani Fragrance Review

NEW! Acqua di Gio Profondo by Giorgio Armani Fragrance Review

Hey, ladies and gentlemen. Steven here from Redolessence. Welcome back to another video. I hope you're all doing well. In 1995, we had Acqua di Giò by Giorgio Armani, which hit the market. Fragrance composed by mastermind Alberto Morillas. Since then, we've seen the introduction of a ton of flankers, Essenza, Profumo, Profumo Special Blend. Now in 2020, we have the introduction of a brand new flanker. This one is called Profondo. I'm excited to tell you what I think of this one, so make sure to stay tuned.

Like I said, this one came out just this year in 2020. I don't think it's currently available in the States yet. I actually got my hands on it because I recently made a trip to Europe. I made a trip to London where I met up with a bunch of my UK fragrance reviewing friends, and so I ended up purchasing this one at the airport. Very excited to be able to review it for you guys today. I've actually been wearing this one all throughout this week. I wore it to work, and it was a pleasant experience. If you have any familiarity with Giorgio Armani's Acqua di Giò, you know that it's a very bright, fresh, uplifting fragrance, very sort of centered around this clean Jasmine with a little bit of citrus, or I should say a lot of citrus.

Of course, there's also calone in here, which is a very clean smelling synthetic ingredient. It just sort of enhances that clean, bright, fresh, citrusy smell of the entire fragrance. Now, this one comes in a blue bottle as opposed to many of the other counterparts. I know the original is in a frosted glass bottle and then there was the clear bottle, which is Essenza. Profumo came in a black bottle. Profumo Special Blend had a little golden accent on the bottom of the bottle there, if I remember correctly. This one is a blue bottle. A lot of people who saw the bottle initially thought, okay, this is going to be a very blue, a much more aquatic or ozonic take on the classic Acqua di Giò DNA. I've had a chance to spend some time with it, and I'm excited to tell you what I think of the smell.

Let's start the review off by taking a quick and close look at the presentation. Now, the presentation for this one is quite similar to other Acqua di Giò presentations that you may have seen in the past, except this one is in blue and it says Profondo towards the bottom here. It is eau de parfum concentration and this one is available in a 40 ML size. When I was at the airport, I saw that they actually had it in three sizes. I decided to purchase the smallest one. This serial number is punched into the box on the bottom. The back has the ingredients and the Giorgio Armani logo is punched into the top of the box. Now, the bottle looks exactly the same as the original Acqua di Giò bottles. It has a frosted glass feel, but it says Profondo towards the bottom and it is blue in color.

The serial number is also printed on the bottom of the bottle. The cap for this fragrance does click into place. Because I have the lighter or the smaller bottle, I should say, I feel good picking it up from the cap. It's not too heavy. The distribution on the atomizer is a little bit narrow, but it gets the job done. Let's continue with the smell. As soon this fragrance opens up, it definitely opens up very bright and fresh and citrusy. I think a lot of these descriptors that I'm throwing out there may just feel like I'm describing the original Acqua di Giò for a lot of people. The original Acqua di Giò definitely has a lot of these same counterparts. It's also very bright and fresh and effervescent.

To put a more blue twist on this flanker is something that I wouldn't imagine is very easy to do just because the original is also aquatic enough. Now, with this one, I do see this sort of... I would describe it as like a sweet Mandarin note up on top. Although it doesn't explicitly smell like Mandarin orange, I definitely get a lot of this citrus presence in the opening, and the original also smells citrusy to me. Now, if I remember correctly, I know lime is a dominant note in the original. This one veers away from the lime note, but it also has some other various citrus notes. There maybe bergamot or neroli. It's more of a rounded out citrusy freshness that I get from this one.

To be honest with you, it kind of reminds me of like a John Varvatos Artisan Acqua or just something that is in that very light, fresh, bright territory. I would also go as far as saying that this one contains a nice amount of calone in it as well. I've had an opportunity to smell the raw material on its own, and sure enough, it definitely provides this very bright, fresh ozonic feel to the fragrance. I know salicylates also contribute to an ozonic feel, and you definitely get a lot of that. Now, I know salt itself doesn't have a smell, but this is something that I would equate to the smell of something that I would consider to be salty. I don't know if it has some other marine-like ingredients in here. I'm sure it does, but it definitely smells like a marine fragrance.

What does that mean? What does that ultimately translate to? I think this is a fragrance that can be adored and enjoyed by many. I think this is a fragrance that no matter who you are, how old you are, what your style is, or what your taste is in regards to fragrances, if you smell this one, you're going to find it to be rather pleasant. I think the only people who won't be initially wowed or impressed by it are the people who just don't have a proclivity for designer fragrances. Maybe they've smelled too many designers. They want to venture off into niche. They want something a little bit more artistic or artisanal, daring, something more of a creative expression as opposed to just taking an existing DNA and putting like a bright fresh blue twist on it.

I think this one though is pleasant, and I think this is the kind of fragrance where I can see somebody running errands or maybe somebody just wants to smell clean, somebody wants to smell fresh, somebody wants a tried and true and a proven DNA, but they don't want to smell like they're coming out of the '90s. They want a slightly different twist on things. They want to smell a bit more contemporary. I do think that this fragrance manages to do that. I will say the one thing that I'm really glad that this fragrance doesn't do is it doesn't utilize this Invictus Aqua accord. I think a lot of fragrances like Run Wild by Davidoff, Urban Hero by Jimmy Choo.

There have been tons of designer fragrances introduced within the past couple of years that have followed the trends and saw that, oh, this is doing really well. This is succeeding in the market. Let's put our own twist on this. I'm glad that for the most part they've stayed away from that. Now, I know there was also Absolu and Absolu Instinct, if I'm not mistaken, and those two flankers kind of took it in a slightly sweeter direction, but I liked that this one kind of goes back to the roots, but not entirely. I think Essenza is very close to the original Acqua di Giò and I can see what they were trying to do with that one. With this one, on the other hand, they decided to I guess modernize it or put a more contemporary twist on it, and I do feel as though they were very successful in doing that.

Another thing that I can say about this fragrance too is that the longevity is pretty decent. Now, it's not a beast mode fragrance, but I did put on four to five sprays all throughout this week when I was wearing it to work and it actually performed really well. It jumped off my skin rather nicely and I did put like two or three sprays on my actual shirt, my dress shirt, and so I was able to smell it wafting off my dress shirt all throughout the day. I wouldn't say this is one that is so light in nature that you're going to need to reapply or carry a bottle with you or anything like that. I think from a longevity or a performance standpoint, this one actually does do pretty well. But I mean, I don't really know what else to say about it. It's a very fresh and appealing fragrance.

It definitely has that Acqua di Giò DNA lurking underneath. I think that when you smell it in the air, you'll think to yourself, oh, that kind of reminds me of Acqua di Giò, and it's not until one actually reveals it that you're going to be like, oh, okay, so it's a flanker of Acqua di Giò, hence the similarity. But ultimately, I do think it's a pleasant scent. I think a lot of people will enjoy it. I think it'll do well on the market, and I give them points and kudos for not actually utilizing that Invictus Aqua accord that is used by so many other brands nowadays. I know I listed like two or three, but there have been tons of designer releases that I can say kind of tried to put their own twist on that DNA. But ultimately, I think it's a very pleasant scent.

I just think it's not one that's going to appeal to niche lovers or those who are looking for something starkly different. I think that if you're a fan of the original Acqua di Giò, but you don't want to smell like your girlfriend's ex boyfriend, you probably want to go with something a little bit more modern, a little bit more contemporary. Let's go ahead and finish things off with my overall assessment. First up, I took a look at the uniqueness in the overall scent, and this one is not totally unique because it is a flanker. Whenever I am reviewing a flanker, that's just sort of something that I need to keep in mind. However, I think in the case of a lot of flankers, they smell so different from the original. Fragrances like Mugler's A*Men come to mind.

Pure Havane really smells nothing like the original A*Men. Kryptomint really smells nothing like the original A*Men. I think in the case of this one, the fact that they managed to retain a little bit of a similarity in there is actually something favorable and something that I would give props to. The overall smell, of course, is very pleasant. If you're familiar with the original Acqua di Giò DNA, you are going to get something rather similar with this one, but a little bit different as well. If I had to put a percentage on the differences of this one, I would say it's 30% different, 70% similar to the original Acqua di Giò. If that's too much of a similarity for your taste, then perhaps this is one that you can see yourself skipping over. Maybe just wait for the next release or something like that.

But if you feel as though that's enough of a disparity, then check this one out at the very least. If you do manage to come across it in department stores, check it out. It might actually be worth your time. In terms of the longevity, good. I got about six to seven hours. Given the concentration, I would say it's average. Now, it's not a beast mode performer, like I said before, but it's one that managed to get me through my work day. For a fresher type of a scent, I think it did pretty well. In terms of the projection for this one, I would say it never really radiates beyond an arm's length. I must say that within the first couple of hours is really when it did well and it did its best and it was able to shine and that's because it is a very citrus heavy scent.

I'm sure if you look at the label, it has like citral and citronellol and linalool and all of these other compounds that are found in more volatile ingredients. It is likely to do well in the very opening. However, once it gets past that five to six hour mark, it will start to sit a little bit closer to the skin. Versatility on this one, also great. Really have no complaints with this one. I just think that a lot of people won't want to wear it in the dead of winter just because it's not the kind of fragrance that I can see doing well when it gets really, really cold outside. If you want to wear this in the summertime, it'll boom and radiate off your skin quite nicely I think.

This is one that could also work well in the fall and in the spring as long as you're wearing it in a climate controlled environment. I think 80% of the day or 90% of the day I'm indoors anyway, so it doesn't really matter, especially right around this time of the year. I think that in terms of age range, it does have a youthful feel to it, but it's not sweet in any way. I don't necessarily see this being the type of fragrance that I would recommend to like a teenager, but I can see like an early college student pulling this off rather nicely. You know what? I think anybody can wear this one. I do find this to be a rather versatile fragrance when it comes to age range. But because it's reminiscent to the original Acqua di Giò DNA, there's about a 70% similarity.

I do say that this one has something that kind of veers in masculine territory, or I think your mind will align it with something that smells masculine just because of the similarity there. Now, the presentation for this one, I do think that the blue bottle quite accurately conveys what this one smells like. My final verdict on this one is I think it is a worthwhile flanker to the Acqua di Giò line. It's one that I actually really enjoy. I think this one will serve as a plus for people who are tired of the mid '90s release and you want something that smells a little bit more modern, a little bit more contemporary, but you don't want it to smell sweet at all. I think this is one that'll really appeal to people's likings and sentiments.

I think that if you were looking for something very, very different from the house of Armani, but also within the Acqua di Giò line, this is not going to give you something super different. But if you appreciate that percentage of similarity, definitely check this one out. I think at the very least, you owe yourself the opportunity or the chance to sample it. There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you so much for tuning in. I really do appreciate it. That was my review of Acqua di Giò Profondo by Giorgio Armani.
